An automatic chicken coop door opens and closes your coop for you β€” every morning and every night β€” so you no longer have to be there at dawn and dusk. Once a niche gadget, automatic coop doors are now an essential part of most keepers' kit, and for good reason: their reliability saves the lives of countless chickens every year by shutting predators out at exactly the right moment. Nestera now offers two automatic door options β€” a battery-powered opener and a new solar-powered smart door β€” so there's one to suit almost any coop. Here's how they work, the key benefits, and how to choose.

The benefits of an automatic coop door

  • Predator protection: the door closes securely at dusk, keeping out foxes, badgers, coyotes and raccoons β€” and blocking smaller pests like mice and rats too.
  • No more early mornings: your flock is let out at first light whether or not you're up, and shut in safely at night without you making the trip.
  • Better welfare: birds get more free-range time β€” out earlier, in later β€” which means more exercise, enrichment and less feather-pecking.
  • Holiday cover made easy: a friend or neighbour only needs to visit once a day instead of twice.
  • A consistent routine: opening and closing at reliable times supports your hens' natural rhythms and laying cycles.
  • Peace of mind: arguably the biggest benefit β€” you stop worrying about whether the coop got closed.

How an automatic coop door works

Both Nestera units can be operated three ways: manually at the touch of a button, automatically on a timer, or automatically using a built-in light sensor. You can open or close the coop any time, day or night.

Timer mode

Set the unit to open and close at fixed times each day β€” for example 7am and 7pm. Just remember that dusk shifts through the year: in the UK it can fall around 3–4pm in midwinter yet 9–10pm in midsummer, so a timer needs adjusting regularly to avoid locking birds out or shutting them in too early.

Light (lux) mode β€” our recommendation

"Lux" means light, but it could just as easily stand for luxury, because it's the setting we always recommend. Chickens have a natural sense for fading light and head to roost at roughly the same light level every evening. The light sensor follows that same cue, closing the coop shortly after the flock has gone in and opening it at first light β€” no seasonal adjustments needed.

Two Nestera door options: which fits your coop?

Nestera makes two automatic doors. The right one depends mainly on which coop you have, so always check compatibility before you buy.

Nestera Automatic Door Opener (battery-powered)

The original Nestera Automatic Door Opener is battery-powered and quick to install on standard Nestera coops such as the House and Lodge, as well as many other brands. It lifts the door vertically and offers manual, timer and light-sensor modes, with an adjustable lux level so you can fine-tune it to flocks that roost a little earlier or later than average. Pop the batteries in, mount the unit and you're ready β€” no wiring required. Change the batteries roughly twice a year, or whenever the low-battery light comes on.

New: Nestera Smart Auto Door (solar-powered)

Our newest option, the Smart Auto Door, adds solar power and app control. It's designed to fit the Aspen coop range and traditional wooden coops. Highlights include:

  • Solar charging: an included solar panel keeps it running autonomously β€” no routine battery changes and no mains electricity, ideal for coops away from a power source.
  • App control via Bluetooth: set schedules, check the door's status and adjust settings from your phone.
  • Three modes: timer, light (opens at sunrise, closes at sunset) and manual.
  • Smart anti-pinch technology: the door closes gently and stops if something's in the way, protecting your birds.
  • Secure locking for solid predator protection.

Quick guide: have a Nestera House or Lodge (or another brand of coop)? Choose the battery-powered Automatic Door Opener. Have an Aspen coop or a traditional wooden coop? Choose the solar Smart Auto Door. If you're unsure, our team is happy to confirm the right fit.

A note on safety: whichever door you choose, it remains your responsibility to make sure your birds are safely inside at night. Check on them before bed and confirm the door has closed properly.

What about ducks?

Automatic doors work for ducks too, though ducks aren't as good as chickens at putting themselves to bed. The unit is still handy for letting all kinds of poultry out each morning β€” giving them a head start on the day while you enjoy yours.

Is an automatic door worth it?

Automatic doors genuinely change how you care for chickens, improving both welfare and security. It's often the one thing new keepers put off buying β€” yet veteran keepers who've experienced the heartbreak of losing a flock to a predator will tell you it's always money well spent. Compare the battery Automatic Door Opener and the solar Smart Auto Door to find the right fit for your coop.

Frequently asked questions

Do automatic chicken coop doors keep predators out?

Yes. By closing securely at dusk and opening at dawn, they shut out night-time predators such as foxes and badgers, as well as rodents β€” provided the rest of the coop is secure.

Timer or light sensor β€” which is better?

We recommend the light sensor. It follows the natural change in daylight through the seasons, so the door always closes around your flock's real bedtime without you resetting a timer.

Which automatic door fits the Aspen coop?

The new solar-powered Smart Auto Door is designed for the Aspen range and traditional wooden coops. For the Nestera House and Lodge (and many other brands), choose the battery-powered Automatic Door Opener.

Does the Smart Auto Door need batteries or mains power?

No. It charges from its included solar panel and runs autonomously, so there are no routine battery changes and no wiring β€” handy for coops away from a power supply.
